That was the moment Switch fell in love. When Breanna, the soft, helpless human, earned the respect of the most messed-up wolves in the Outlaw Ridge pack.

With cookies and chutzpah.

He was fucking doomed.

They’d made no decisions about their relationship, because they both knew the only real decision was that they shouldn’t be together.

But neither one of them wanted to make that decision until they were smacked in the face with it.

Deep down inside, though, he knew this wasn’t the life for her. Even if he left here and took her home with him, the problem was still the same. He was a guy outside the law, working for people outside the law.

His life was dangerous and unpredictable.

And even if he tried to build some other kind of life, he was a wolf shifter. It was a hard, brutal existence, and not one he’d wish on a woman who hadn’t been born to it.

Certainly not on a woman he loved.

So instead, he did everything he could for Bree.

He convinced Mikey to help him teach her self-defense, how to use a knife and shoot a gun.

And asked her to put out feelers to her dragon relatives. He knew some of them owned a major corporation in Seattle—a legit company that employed hundreds of people. Maybe there was some kind of a job there for Breanna. If dragons couldn’t keep her safe, no one could.

And he made love to her with the desperation of a man who knew that the good things in his life didn’t last.

Switch also tracked down every bit of dirt he could find on Quentin Moreno. How big the illegal side of his business was. How much debt he was in. He heard rumors that Moreno had been supposed to get a big influx of cash, but something had gone wrong, and he hadn’t been able to supply some of his dark-side clients with things he’d promised them.

Guns. Drugs.

He wondered if this cash deal was what Breanna and Kimberly had messed up—and if Breanna somehow knew something that would fix it. Like something Kimberly had? No one had found a trace of her, since the night he’d picked up Breanna.

Dead? Or hiding? Or on a beach in the south of France, and the hell with Moreno and Breanna both?

There were too many unanswered questions. And if he didn’t find the answers, it was possible that the only way to make sure Breanna was safe was to kill Quentin Moreno dead.

Luckily, Switch was okay with that.
